The Drawings of Michelangelo and His Followers in the Ashmolean Museum is Paul Joannides’ full catalogue of the Ashmolean’s renowned collection. This digital PDF edition is ready for instant download after purchase. It is an essential reference for anyone studying Renaissance drawings.
The Ashmolean Museum holds the third largest collection of drawings by Michelangelo in the world, after the Casa Buonarroti and the British Museum. This catalogue covers autograph sheets, studio works, and copies after Michelangelo’s art.
Book Overview
This volume, written by Paul Joannides, Professor of Art History at the University of Cambridge, provides a detailed account of drawings by and after Michelangelo in the Ashmolean Museum. The catalogue is preceded by two introductions: one tracing the history and provenance of Michelangelo’s drawings, and another surveying his types of drawing and stylistic development.
The collection largely came from Sir Thomas Lawrence, whose assemblage of Old Master Drawings was the greatest ever formed in Britain. Two appendices trace the histories of the Lawrence drawings by or after Michelangelo.
