What You’ll Learn
Understanding eBook File Types
A file format describes how information is stored. Different eBook formats use different layouts, features and reading software.
eBook & Document Formats
PDF, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2 and similar files contain documents or books that can be opened with compatible software.
Archive Formats
ZIP, RAR and 7Z are containers that may hold one or several files. Extract them to access the books inside.
File extension:
The letters after the final
dot in a filename typically
indicate its format,
such as .pdf,
.epub,
.zip
or .7z.
Changing a filename’s extension does not convert the file to another format. Use suitable software for the actual file type.
Common eBook Formats Explained
The following table explains common digital reading and document formats. It is a general compatibility guide, not a guarantee that every BooksStore title includes these formats.
| Format | What It Is | How to Open It |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-layout document, commonly retaining original page design. | PDF readers and many modern browsers. | |
| EPUB | Popular digital book format, often supporting adjustable text layouts. | Apple Books, Calibre, and other EPUB readers. |
| MOBI | Older eBook format associated with Kindle workflows. | Compatible older software or reading devices; support varies. |
| AZW / AZW3 | Formats associated with Amazon Kindle. | Compatible Kindle devices and selected reading software, subject to restrictions. |
| FB2 | FictionBook XML-based eBook format. | FB2-compatible readers and selected eBook apps. |
| DJVU | Document format often used for scanned pages and publications. | A DJVU-compatible document viewer. |
| TXT | Simple plain-text file, usually without complex formatting. | Built-in text editors or compatible readers. |
| DOC / DOCX | Editable document file formats. | Compatible word processing software. |
| RTF | Rich text document with basic formatting. | Supported word processing applications. |
| HTML | Web document format used for some digital publications. | Compatible web browser. |
| CBZ / CBR | Comic book archives containing page images. | Comic readers that support the specific format. |
PDF or EPUB — Which Is Better?
PDF is often preferable when preserving the exact design of a page is important, such as an illustrated document or a reference book.
EPUB is often more comfortable for reading text-heavy books on phones and small screens because many EPUB readers allow the text size and layout to adjust.
Note: Some files may include digital rights management (DRM), embedded fonts, special layouts or licensing restrictions. These can affect compatibility even when a device otherwise supports the format.
ZIP, RAR and 7Z eBook Files
Some BooksStore purchases may be supplied in compressed archives. These packages can contain one or more eBooks, folders, or other supporting files.
ZIP Archives
Widely supported compressed file format. ZIP extraction is built into many desktop and mobile operating systems.
RAR Archives
A compressed archive format that may require an additional extraction app, depending on your device.
7Z Archives
A compressed archive format commonly associated with 7-Zip. Compatible extraction software is required.
Read the Contents
Once extracted, identify the book’s actual format and open it using a suitable reading application.
Important: An archive is not itself a readable eBook. For example, a ZIP may contain a PDF, an EPUB, both, or other files. Its actual contents depend on the purchased product.
How to Extract ZIP, RAR and 7Z Files
Follow these steps to access the contents of a compressed digital book download.
- Download the archive. Save the ZIP, RAR or 7Z file to your device. Allow the download to finish before attempting extraction.
- Locate the downloaded file. Open the Downloads folder or the folder selected when saving the archive.
- Open a suitable extraction tool. Use built-in ZIP extraction where supported, or install a compatible archive app.
- Extract the archive. Select Extract, Unzip, or an equivalent option. Choose an appropriate destination folder.
- Open the extracted book. Locate the PDF, EPUB, or other supported file inside the extracted folder.
Extraction by Device
Windows
Use File Explorer for supported ZIP files. For other archive types, try a compatible utility such as 7-Zip.
macOS
Archive Utility handles ZIP files. Compatible third-party software may be needed for RAR and 7Z.
Android
Use your device’s file manager where supported, or install a trusted archive extraction app for other formats.
iPhone & iPad
The Files app supports ZIP extraction. Compatible third-party apps may be needed for RAR and 7Z.
Password-protected archives: Some archives may require a password. Use the authorized instructions provided with your order. If a required password was not supplied, contact BooksStore support. Do not run unexpected executable files contained in an archive.
eBook Device Compatibility Guide
Different devices support different file formats. The following is a general guide; exact compatibility depends on the device model, software, transfer method, and file restrictions.
| Device | Typical Options | Important Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | PDF readers, EPUB apps, Calibre, archive tools. | Broad format support with appropriate software. |
| Mac | Preview, Apple Books, Calibre, archive apps. | Some formats require additional applications. |
| Android | PDF/EPUB readers, file managers, archive extraction apps. | Availability depends on installed apps. |
| iPhone / iPad | Files, Apple Books, PDF readers, compatible archive apps. | RAR and 7Z typically require third-party apps. |
| Kindle | Compatible Kindle formats and supported document transfer methods. | EPUB handling depends on the transfer service; not every downloaded EPUB opens directly. |
| Kobo | Supported EPUB, PDF, and other model-specific reading formats. | Verify model and DRM compatibility before use. |
Can I Use BooksStore Files on Kindle?
Some purchased files may be usable with compatible Kindle devices or supported transfer methods. However, a format’s name alone does not guarantee compatibility.
EPUB may be accepted through supported Send to Kindle workflows, but that is not the same as directly opening every EPUB file on a Kindle device.
ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives generally need to be extracted before transferring any supported book files to an eReader.
Always check the current requirements for your reader model and chosen transfer method.
Reading and Extraction Applications
The following are examples of established applications commonly used to open documents, manage eBooks, or extract archives.
| Application | Common Purpose | Website |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Viewing PDF documents. | Adobe |
| Calibre | eBook management and supported reading formats. | Calibre |
| Apple Books | Reading supported eBooks on Apple devices. | Apple Books |
| 7-Zip | Extracting ZIP, RAR, 7Z and other supported archives. | 7-Zip |

Third-party software: These applications are provided by their respective developers, not BooksStore. Check the official website, system requirements, licensing conditions, and supported versions before installing.
Troubleshooting File Problems
My file won’t open.
Check the file extension and confirm you are using an application compatible with that format.
I downloaded ZIP, RAR or 7Z.
Use a suitable archive extraction tool first. After extraction, open the actual eBook file inside the folder.
The archive shows an error.
Confirm the download finished and that you have enough available storage. Try a compatible extractor. If the archive is damaged, contact support.
My Kindle does not recognize the book.
Check the supported file formats and transfer method for your Kindle model. Archives should be extracted before transfer.
The file is password-protected.
Review your order and product instructions for the password. If the required information was not provided, contact BooksStore.
