Why This Book Matters

Ratatouille centers on a rat with refined taste who dreams of cooking in an elite French kitchen. As John Lasseter writes in the foreword, the premise creates a visual challenge: Paris is beautiful and appealing, while a rat in a kitchen is not.

This book shows how the artists balanced those extremes, making even the grungiest characters as charming as the most gorgeous Parisian settings. It is a valuable record of the film’s visual development and animation artistry.
