Book Overview
How to Draw with a Ballpoint Pen by Gecko Keck offers sketching instruction and creativity starters centered on ballpoint pen drawing. The book presents a collection of drawings created over many weeks and months, grouped into instructional and thematic sections.
The foreword frames the ballpoint pen as more than quick notes, positioning it as a medium for art and design. The contents list includes exercises and projects such as a first stress test, work with circles and lines, comics and surreal worlds, typography, pixel-based drawing, and observational drawing and caricature.
What You’ll Discover Inside
- A first stress test for working with ballpoint pen marks, impact areas, and gradations
- Exercises connected to themed line work, including projects titled “In the Labyrinth of Lines”
- Creative approaches in comics, including “Comics, the First Steps” and “Comics, the Next Steps”
- Surreal and fantasy techniques, including “Other Surreal Techniques and Fantasy Worlds”

Why This Book Matters
This title is written around accessible materials: a ballpoint pen and the mark-making possibilities it offers. It brings together instruction-style chapters with a variety of drawing themes, designed to help readers build ideas over time.
Because the book is structured around repeated practice and different creative prompts, it can support readers who want to expand what they can do with pen drawings, not just produce single finished images.
